Meet Jian Liu - Levidian's Senior EC&I Engineer

Jian joined the team in 2022 and plays an important role in our engineering team to ensure the safety and reliability of our equipment.

Hear from Jian about his experience prior to joining Levidian, his skills in system design and engineering, and why he’s passionate about working in the climate tech industry.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience prior to joining Levidian?

I hold an MSc in Computing Science and a PhD in Robotics, both of which have provided me with a strong foundation in software development and electrical engineering.

I spent the first seven years of my career in the UK working in a scientific instrument company for testing battery thermal dynamics, where I gained valuable experience in software development and control systems design. Here I had the opportunity to work on several projects for companies such as NASA, BMW, and Panasonic. A key part of my role was to develop reliable, efficient, and scalable software that ensures instruments function smoothly and accurately.

Additionally, I have worked as a control engineer in different machine design companies over many years, where I designed and developed control software in various industries such as food, PVD coating, packaging, and pharmaceuticals. Through this I have developed expertise in electrical engineering, machine design, and project management. All valuable skills for my current role at Levidian!

What does your current role as Senior EC&I Engineer at Levidian involve?

As a software engineer and control systems designer, it’s exciting to be part of the team at Levidian. I work closely with a strong team of engineers and technicians, and my primary responsibility is to ensure that our equipment meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, efficiency, and functionality.

As Senior EC&I Engineer, I’m responsible for overseeing the electrical, control, and instrumentation aspects of our equipment design and implementation, with a particular focus on the Levidian LOOP. This involves collaborating closely with other engineers and technicians to develop and implement effective control systems, selecting appropriate sensors and instrumentation to measure and monitor critical parameters, and ensuring that all equipment meets relevant safety and regulatory standards.

For example, with LOOP, I was involved in designing and implementing the PLC-based control system, selecting the appropriate control system and modules, and developing software to monitor and control the flow of methane gas and other inputs. I also worked closely with the the team to test and validate the system, ensuring that it operates within safe and reliable parameters.

What inspired you to join a climate tech company like Levidian?

I’ve always been inspired by the idea of making a difference and having a positive impact on the world. I was drawn to the climate tech industry because of its potential to contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

It’s great to be part of a like-minded team where we can learn from and encourage each other, and work together to each make our small contribution to a greener planet.
